This is some damned sad business. I feel badly for Meghan McCain. She and I wouldn’t agree on much where it comes to politics, but when I see Laura Ingraham’s recent quotes about McCain’s weight, it reminds me what a petty schoolyard we live in. Ingraham, Coulter, et al, overbred and maintained like show dogs, snipe at the new girl in order to smack her down, right there in the hallway so everyone can see. It’s ridiculous that McCain should even have to put up with this. My contempt for these harridans deepens.
As for Meghan McCain, though, she’s handled herself pretty well in this situation. Politics is a tough game, as she’s now discovering, but come on—”plus-sized” is just some more of the Right’s utter lack of self-awareness on view for all of us to witness. It’s like Dubya calling himself “authoritarian” at that Galgary speech yesterday; whether a Freudian slip or a sign of ignorance, it tells us something important about these people. It’s why the Right doesn’t belong anywhere near power. That 40-year walk into the wilderness Frank Rich referred to wouldn’t be nearly long enough to suit me.
