Jeff Beck Plays Billy Cobham (a little post for Jeff DiFiore and Bill Norman, two of my favorite guitar players); Also Focus and “Hocus Pocus”

Here’s a bit of YouTube video that’ll make your eyes bug out like Jim Carrey in The Mask. This is for Jeff and Bill, two guys I love. It’s just good to know they’re continuing. So’s Beck. Jeff D. and I saw Beck with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice, along with a singer I thought unfortunate (the story of that late 1972 tour—sorry, Jeff D. and Bill for dating us all—is here), but they played “Definitely Maybe” that night and I would not be the same listener I am without having heard that song that night. Really. All these decades later, it’s still that important. Hell, Bill knows, too. We all went to see Focus one night in St. Petersburg and wound up having drinks afterwards with Thijs van Leer, one of those nights about which you tell people later and they say, “No, you didn’t.”

Maybe people get it. Maybe they don’t. It doesn’t matter. But it’s on offer. I know two guys who definitely understand, and I’m happy to call them my friends.
