O. Henry, Still Making News a Century After His Death

Happened to find this story through Poets & Writers—naturally. Porter and his pilsner, eh? Hey….I’m the last person who should cast aspersions on a soul, so I won’t; besides, the idea that he felt such shame over having served time could seem surprising in a time when we see people like Lindsay Lohan, or Paris Hilton, various hip-hop artists, various actors of varying abilities and/or levels of notoriety, dealing with the machinery of justice in full public view. Thing is, though, it shouldn’t surprise any of us. That age was remarkable for its requirements of propriety in general, the secrets one had to keep in order to even minimally function in society.
