Letter to Lara Logan

Dear Lara,

First, bless you. You suffered an inhuman act and have now come home. Everyone who knows your work knows you are truly a “force of nature” (and, BTW, were I some ne’er-do-well anywhere in your range of investigative interest, I would truly be afraid) and you have never backed down from an assignment. Your experience is a reminder to everyone who reports (and reads) the news that correspondents might at any point become victims. It’s something I dread from the reader’s perspective, of course, because you and your colleagues place yourselves at extraordinary risk for information’s sake.

My lifelong respect to you. Comfort to your family, solace as time moves.

I’ve nothing to say to the people who violated you. They can’t be reasoned with. Whoever they are, they’re well past any sensible argument. I leave that to others. All I know is that what happened to you is among the worst of human sins and violations, and here’s to your recovery.
